Pakistan, the 6th-largest country in the world, saw high growth rates between 2004 and 2007 with some slowing during the current worldwide economic slowdown. In the midst of dealing with current economic challenges, the new Pakistan government has stated a commitment to investment in education, healthcare, and electricity production, and reducing dependence on foreign donors. Ambassador Haqqani will provide an update on Pakistan, including its economy, and the current state of U.S. – Pakistan bilateral relations. He will also provide an update on the commercial and national security impacts of Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) in Pakistan. The ROZs program was originated by U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell and is designed to provide a major incentive to investment and creation of jobs and income opportunities for persons living in those areas, helping them to resist recruitment efforts by terrorists and insurgents by providing resources for family needs, schools and other basics.

Ambassador Haqqani started career as a journalist while still at High School with articles published in a variety of national newspapers. He later went on to be Pakistan and Afghanistan correspondent for ‘Far Eastern Economic Review’, a syndicated columnist and television commentator. He became the Special Assistant to the Chief Minister, Punjab in 1988 and later served a number of prime ministers. He became one of Pakistan’s youngest ambassadors while serving as Ambassador to Sri Lanka in the early 1990s. Ambassador Haqqani will provide his years of experience and wisdom in Pakistan and its relations with the United States.
