Over 400 companies employing 16,000 people give Washington State and the Greater Seattle region one of the largest concentrations in the environmental industry. Regional firms have led their peers in developing innovative solutions to environmental problems including toxic, radioactive and hazardous waste cleanup, water and air pollution abatement, and recycling and waste management.

The University of Washington has a landmark Environmental Management Program combining an MBA curriculum with environmental training and principles. Washington state was ranked 15th in the nation in revenues generated by the environmental sector with approximately $1.7 billion in 2000.
