This year marks the 35th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Seattle and Tashkent, the capital city of the Republic of Uzbekistan. With a population of approximately 2.3 million, Tashkent is the largest city in Central Asia. Its main industries include mining equipment, tobacco, chemical products, and textiles.
The Seattle-Tashkent Association, established in 1973, was the first US-Soviet sister city affiliation. Over the years it has organized exchanges with school children and teachers, mountain climbers, physicians, chefs, lawyers, broadcasters, and folk dancers. In 1988 the association and Plowshares Peace Corps volunteers organized the entire Seattle community in the design and creation of the Seattle Peace Park in Tashkent.
Join the Trade Alliance as we hear from the Uzbek Ambassador to the U.S., H.E. Abdulaziz Kamilov, the Deputy Mayor of Tashkent, Mr. Mukhamedjanov, and a 15-member business and sister city delegation on the latest developments in Tashkent.
H.E. Abdulaziz Kamilov was appointed as the Ambassador to the U.S. for the Republic of Uzbekistan in October 2003. Prior to his role as Ambassador, Kamilov served as State Advisor to the President of Uzbekistan and as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Kamilov’s distinguished career in foreign service includes positions such as Vice Chairman of Uzbekistan’s National Security Service and Counselor at the Uzbekistan Embassy in Russia.
Mr. Mukhamedjanov has held the position of Deputy Mayor of Tashkent since 1994.
