With a GDP of nearly $2 trillion, Brazil is by far the largest economy in South America. Join the Trade Alliance and the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies for a briefing on Brazil and its business environment. In 2008, Brazil was Washington State’s 11th largest export market, with exports totaling $1.6 billion.  To exports from Washington State to Brazil include transportation equipment, machinery manufactures, petroleum and coal products, and computers and electronics.

Ambassador Maurício Eduardo Cortes Costa was born in Rio the Janeiro. He was appointed Consul General of Brazil in San Francisco in September 2006. He has held posts in London, Montevideo, Madrid, Washington, and Boston, where he has also worked as Consul General.

Throughout his career in the Brazilian Foreign Service, he has specialized in economic matters and has published papers and articles on subjects such as international economics, foreign trade, regional integration and intellectual property.

Prior to taking his current post, he headed the Secretariat of Foreign Trade in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism and, subsequently, the International Office in the Ministry of Agriculture.

Jonathan Warren is Chair of Latin American Studies and Associate Professor of International Studies at the University of Washington. Within the broad area of critical race studies he has focused on whiteness, racism literacy, racial identity formations, and the links between everyday practices and racism in the US and Brazil. Professor Warren is currently working on a comparative study of modernities in Brazil and Vietnam.
