Congressman Reichert will be speaking at Bellevue City Hall on the importance of trade and an update on the pending Free Trade Agreements. The Congressman will share about his recent trip to Korea and provide an update on what is happening regarding trade in Washington DC. Please join us at 10:00 on June 29th to hear his presentation.
The US – Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS) is the world’s 3rd largest in dollar terms, behind only NAFTA and the EU. Together, the two countries’ GDP exceeds $14 trillion annually. Korea was Washington State’s fourth largest 2-way trade partner as of 2008, and fifth largest export customer.
Congressman Dave Reichert (WA-08) is appointed to the House Committee on Ways and Means, the Trade Subcommittee and founded the bipartisan U.S.-Korea FTA Working Group. The Ways and Means Committee’s jurisdiction includes enactment of free trade agreements. Cong. Reichert is a member of the President’s National Export Council. He has supported the Korea-United States Free Trade Agreement (also known as KORUS FTA). Congress is expected to consider the agreement soon. In April, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and the congressional delegation including Congressman Reichert conducted a three-day trip to Seoul. The group met with President Lee Myung-Bak, leaders of South Korea’s Democratic Party and Grand National Party at Korea’s National Assembly to discuss the U.S.-South Korea Trade Agreement (KORUS). Congressman Reichert’s district includes Bellevue, East King County, and East Pierce County areas.
