The European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) was created in 1991 to provide financing primarily for private sector projects in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The EBRD is the largest lender and private equity investor in CEE and CIS, with a current portfolio of about EUR 62 billion, and an operational track record in the region which stretches back 20 years. Furthermore, the EBRD is currently considering an extension of the Bank’s geographic mandate to countries in the Middle East and North Africa. The United States is the major shareholder of the EBRD.
Varel Freeman is the current First Vice President to the EBRD. He oversees all banking operations and chairs the Operations Committee, which reviews all investment and loan proposals, and is a member of the Executive Committee. Mr. Freeman has extensive experience in emerging market economies in both the public and private sectors. He has focused on Latin America and Africa in past roles and is very familiar with these particular regions.
