Growing the industry that grows jobs: Washington Interactive Media Accelerator

Want to see a bright light at the end of the jobs tunnel? Look at interactive media.

The interactive media industry is booming in Greater Seattle. The sector witnessed a 33% increase in the number of employees in our region since 2007, and hopefully this number will only grow.

Our region is taking steps to ensure exactly that. EnterpriseSeattle, King County’s economic development agency was recently awarded a $1.2 million federal grant from the Federal Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge, a multi-agency competition that identifies and supports 20 high-growth, regional industry clusters. The fund will help to establish the Washington Interactive Media Accelerator (WIMA) and support the interactive media industry in Washington state.

According to enterpriseSeattle President Jeff Marcell, there are more than 150 interactive media companies in Washington state employing over 15,000 people. “The funding from this grant…will continue to attract jobs and capital investment to our region,” he said.

WIMA will help to facilitate continued growth by providing support services for new startups, internships and professional training opportunities, while building on current partnerships. Thanks to this grant, enterpriseSeattle will be able to support and advance a new and exciting industry, a young one that often has little infrastructure of support services to assist start-ups or provide professional training and career development opportunities. Congratulations to enterpriseSeattle!
