Take advantage of the Foreign Trade Zone

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Many manufacturers and distributors are not aware of the benefits of the Foreign Trade Zone, and the Port of Seattle wants companies to take advantage of it. The Zone, granted 61 years ago has only one company utilizing it. The Foreign Trade Zone allows companies relief from inverted tariff; duty exemption on re-exports; duty elimination on waste, scrap, and yield loss; weekly entry savings where instead of filing a customs entry per shipment, companies can file per week; and duty deferral. This provides local manufacturers and distributors a level playing field and it allows them to be more competitive.

The port has streamlined the process by making it easier for companies to be approved. Now, less paperwork is required and applying to be in a “subzone” (a zone outside the existing zone facility) takes only 30 days. The United States has 250 Foreign Trade Zones and within that, Washington state has 13.
